Out-There Movie Gems by Women Directors: A Film Series

While searching for films, librarian Wil Gregersen fell into a rabbit hole of marvelously unconventional movies written and directed by women. Join him for a selection of these wild movie treasures on Thursdays at 7 p.m.

On March 23, see A New Leaf (1971), starring Walter Matthau and Elaine May. Elaine May writes and directs this wild comedy about a calculating heir who marries an awkward heiress with the intention of killing her and taking her money.

On March 30, sit back for Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979), starring John Heard and Mary Beth Hurt. Joan Micklin Silver writes and directs this eccentric romantic comedy about civil servant who falls in love with a married woman and schemes to win her away from her husband.

On April 6, enjoy But I’m a Cheerleader (1999), starring Natasha Lyonne and Cathy Moriarty. Jamie Babbit writes and directs this outrageous comedy about a cheerleader whose family sends her to a deprogramming camp because they think she’s a lesbian.

On April 13, watch The Future (2011), starring Miranda July and Hamish Linklater. Miranda July writes and directs this quirky drama about an anxious young couple who take a break from life to explore their creative sides before they’re tied down by a new cat.

This program is free and open to all. Drop in for a fun time.
