In the 1800s, steamships carried hungry travelers up and down Narragansett Bay to clambakes and shore dinner halls, and in the 20th century, Rhode Islanders hopped in their automobiles for clam cakes and chowder at clam shacks and chowder houses at the beach and on the waterfront.
