Atlantis, one of Disney’s most notable box office failures, lives in infamy amongst producers and directors alike. After its failure, the company was extremely wary of films like it and began to drift towards less unique content. However, the film remains a cult-classic among fans and is objectively one of the most creative films Disney has ever produced. Atlantis follows Milo Thatch, a linguist and cartographer dead set on finding the lost city of Atlantis and the power source that fueled it. When he is hired by an old friend of his grandfather’s to find the city, him and his crew discover that its people did not die, but had been living underwater for thousands of years. Exploring themes of cultural deterioration, tomb raiding, and the ethics of archaeology, the film was simply not fit for its time. Filled with stunning visuals and use of both 3-D and 2-D animation, it is absolutely worth a watch.
