This is one of the most unique monster movies to come out in the last few decades. Most films would just settle for a big action movie star running around and shooting a monster with a rocket launcher screaming stuff like “is that all you got?!” Godzilla 2014 is very different. It takes it’s time to build suspense and set up an intriguing plot. The mystery behind the two enemy monsters is extremely well executed and makes for a super entertaining experience whenever they are on screen. The characters are also not what you’d expect from a Godzilla movie, but they unfortunately have some glaring flaws. Bryan Cranston’s character is incredible with real emotions and motivations, but he isn’t in the movie for long enough for it to really matter. The film’s main protagonist is Aaron Taylor Johnson’s character, and he’s fairly bland and emotionless. Whenever he’s on screen, it becomes a fairly standard military movie. Now let’s talk about the big guy himself. He is absolutely incredible. I can’t say anything new about him because he’s exactly how you would expect him to be. Slow, intimidating, well animated, he has everything. Overall, if you get past the weakness of the main character, Godzilla is one of the best monster films in recent history.
