The 2021 film, Cruella, was as mesmerizing as it was ingenious. The imploringly eccentric visuals and aesthetic of the overall film, paired with the initial plot and script, made it truly a work of art. Not to mention, it somehow perfectly balanced the scale between a modern originality and nostalgia, including various characters and locations in reference to the previous films, and even sneaking very specific instances and implications to the locations and plot of the 1961, 101 Dalmatians. Though initially I wasn’t all too fascinated with the storyline, once I got more of a feel for the movie, I was completely enthralled. I found that the storyline was, in fact, phenomenal, full of unexpected twists and reveals while also providing a very creative take on the villain “Cruella”. It’s really able to give distinctive insight on the character and tell us a story of an “odd one out”, someone who carved their way through society and its norms and made it out “not all together, but it was her nonetheless”. Then there’s the looks and style of the film in general, a perfect mix of a vintage, old-fashion spin on a “high fashion” type punk rock, which immediately sets the tone for the overall film. All in all, not only is this something I feel an older, classics type Disney fan may appreciate, it is definitely a movie I will and I know this will go down in my list of top favorites.
