The Divergent series by Veronica Roth is a trilogy filled with action-packed drama. Set in the future, Beatrice Prior lives in a city (which is revealed as Chicago later on in the series) where people live by five factions: Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Amity, and Dauntless. The Abnegation are selfless people, always doing something that benefits someone else rather than themselves. The Candor cannot tell lies. They live honest and true lifestyles that have been ingrained in them. The Erudite are knowledge-seeking folks. It is their belief that knowledge is the top priority. The Amity believe in kindness, and would never involve themselves in any type of violence. And finally, the Dauntless are born with freedom, and they live the most dangerous lifestyle of all. This is how the people live, honoring the phrase “faction before blood,” meaning one’s faction is more important than one’s family. Beatrice is born into Abnegation, living with her parents and her brother. However, when she takes her Aptitude Test, a test that will most likely decide what faction she will be for the remainder of her life, her results are varied. She ends up receiving an aptitude for more than one faction, labeling her as Divergent. After choosing her faction at the Choosing Ceremony, things get strange. A person by the name of Jeanine Matthews has a notorious plan. As a Divergent, Beatrice (who changes her name to “Tris”) is immune to a serum, and things get wild among the factions. Battles commerce, and danger spreads throughout the city. Tris, along with the help of her friends, have danger to take care of, and they need to find what is “outside the fence.” This trilogy was a very interesting read, so for anyone looking for a good series, meet Divergent by Veronica Roth.
