Following the lives of Amir and Hassan in Kabul, The Kite Runner is a story about pain, heartbreak, and redemption. The book begins with Amir’s recollection of his childhood growing up with his servant’s son, Hassan. As he recalls his youth, Amir reflects on his own evils as a child and everything that went wrong. He holds an immense amount of guilt for the way he treated his best friend, and the ways he could have helped him. The Kite Runner also delves into the Taliban and the way it destroyed Amir’s home, pushing him out of it. As Amir is an adult, living a now somewhat normal life in America, an old friend from Kabul calls on him to come back. If Amir returns to Kabul, he could very well die. However, his journey would be one of redemption and righting his past wrongs. Is it worth it to make things right? The Kite Runner is an excellent book that every young adult should read. It explores morality and develops a deeper understanding of the lives of those in war-torn countries.
