As someone who reads everyday, I’ve read a fair share of books throughout thirteen and a half years. And with all those books taken into account, the book, or rather the series, that tops my list is the Arc of a Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman. As a little backstory, this series is set in the future, where people live in a perfect world. No war, no homelessness, no disease, just people living easy-going lives. If you break a bone, no worries. You’re pain nanites will kick in and you’ll be as good as new by tomorrow morning. Rendered deadish in some wild accident? No biggie; an ambudrone will be by soon enough to take you to the nearest revival center (and, hey, your first revival is free of charge!). The Thunderhead basically runs everything and keeps the world in order. Those that need help, or a mere conversation, can seek out the Thunderhead’s knowledge and receive exactly what they need. However, it is no say in the Scythedom and scythe action. Scythes are those that balance out the population. They unbiasedly choose who should be killed, or “gleaned.” And as the Thunderhead has no interference in scythe matters, those who are gleaned stay gleaned. This is the work that those such as Scythe Faraday do, and Scythe Faraday has taken on two apprentices: Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch. These two are easily likeable characters, with their unique personalities. These two protagonists go through quite the ordeal throughout their year as an apprentice, and only one will receive a scythe’s ring. However, due to some other scythes, this is not a typical apprenticeship, and you’ll have to read Scythe to find out why. From there, Thunderhead and The Toll only get more intriguing, and Neal Shusterman’s incredible plot will have you on the edge of your seat! So, if you are looking for a good series to read, look no further, and discover the Arc of a Scythe trilogy!
