Salt to the Sea By Ruta Sepetys - Salt to the Sea takes place during WW2 and follows four different characters from all different backgrounds, mostly facing the same problems, as they are seeking freedom on the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety to all. The writing in this book was very remarkable and the way that Ruta laid out the story through her writing was so just perfect. I felt like every word in this novel had a purpose. There were even sentences that she would somehow tangle together through all the different points of view to connect them and I thought that was incredibly smart. Telling more about this novel. It follows Joana, Emilia, Florian, and Alfred. All of them are trying a passage on Wilhelm Gustloff. It takes place in the Winter of 1945. All of these young adults and the passengers aboard the Gustloff are hoping for freedom and safety from the war. This book was also inspired by the biggest marine tragedy ever. This is not a happy book about rainbows and sunshine. It is insanely real and moving, and at times saddening, this book brings attention to the depths of human immorality, as well as the incredible kindness that some people are capable of. This is a story of tragedy and survival. It was raw, tough, and inspiring.
