Hacksaw Ridge is a biographical war film written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, directed by Mel Gibson. It received incredibly positive feedback after its publication in 2016, and it is understandable why. Hacksaw Ridge follows the story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss, a devout Seventh-day Adventist and pacifist, and his outstanding feats at the Battle of Hacksaw Ridge during World War II. By the end of the movie, the viewer is not left feeling heavy or burdened, as is the case with Schindler’s List, but rather proud and inspired. It was amazing to observe the bravery and perseverance that can be brought about by having strong values. Pfc. Doss refused to lay his hands on a weapon and served as a combat medic, protected by nothing but his faith. The movie remained historically accurate, with the exception of some creative license, and painted a perfectly grim picture of the reality of war. Additionally, the lack of music brought about a chilling realism to the table, creating a tense atmosphere as Pfc. Doss rushed into the battlefield with nothing but a bible in his pocket. The final message that the movie leaves the viewer with is that true bravery is not about how hard you punch, but how you respond when what you value most is under attack. Pfc. Desmond T. Doss valued his faith and pacifism above all else, and he refused to back down while saving nearly one hundred lives. Hacksaw Ridge is a must-watch war epic that leaves a lasting impression and inspires you to never give up what you believe in.
