Paranorman is a stop motion movie for older kids set in Salem, Massachusetts. This setting of course carries with it the Salem witch trials, and other content that may be upsetting to children younger than 13. As is typical from Laika studios, the carefully crafted animation is not only impressive on its own, but lends itself perfectly to the story's setting and themes of bullying and isolation in childhood. The movie has a very positive message of overcoming these problems, and treating people with understanding and respect before making assumptions. The film tells a very important lesson both socially and historically, showing a side to the Salem witch trials that is not often discussed, especially to children.
