Rhode Island Adjutant General’s Reports

The Adjutant General is the chief administrative officer for a state or major military unit. This officer is head of the Adjutant General’s Corps and is responsible for the procedures affecting awards and decorations, as well as casualty operations, and for the administration and preservation of records of all army personnel.

The Adjutant General’s Reports are good primary sources for detailed contemporary accounts of military action, registers of enrolled militia, volunteers, equipment, expenses etc. Sometimes they contain maps, orders, and letters of report from the Quartermaster General, Surgeon General, Commissioners and so on.
